Library of Borges: Vol. 8

The truth is that we live our lives putting off all that can be put off; perhaps we all know deep down that we are immortal and that sooner or later all men will do and know all things.

  1. These last three quotes had more resonance with me than the earlier ones. These contemplations exist in a territory of thought that seems familiar to me. The idea of making a mark as an individual becomes less important when you realize that humanity's achievements are shared, and that someday, someone out there will do the dishes. I've also thought a bit about the mortality of memory, and even recorded history. Although an individual's accomplishments will affect the human experience eternally, ultimately, their name may fade into obscurity, or even disappear completely. I think one day history books may be too long to include Abraham Lincoln, or the Beatles. Who knows...
